Leeward Community College

Accreditation Action Plan

Progress Report

April 2003

Summary of original problem as explained in the 2000 Self-Study Report:

Standard (8.1)  The College will look into fire safety codes to insure that it is in compliance.

Explanation of the present status of the problem:

The college facilities are over 30 years old with limited funding for routine repairs and maintenance.  The existing fire alarm system is rusted and may not be fully functional.

Proposal of possible solutions to the problem:

The solutions to the problem are already in progress.

The University of Hawaii’s Environmental Health and Safety Office recently visited Leeward Community College and is currently assessing fire safety issues.  They have not completed the study and will be having another visit in April 2002.  Once the review is done and a written report received, the college will identify R&M projects to comply with fire safety codes and request for funding through the UHCC Chancellor’s Office.

Leeward Community College was recently authorized to spend $1,118,600 for  “Fire Safety Improvements.”  Construction will begin this year and will basically replace the college’s fire alarm system.

The college is in the construction phase of replacing the fire alarm system on campus.  The new system which is expected to be completed in 2003 will bring the college up to current fire codes and fully compliant.
