AIC – Campus Council Constituency Roles

AIC Committee Meeting

October 8, 2001

Minutes of September 24^th meeting were approved by all members

Overview and Expectations of Committee Members regarding the role of this committee

Chair Dale Hood asked the committee members for their input and ideas regarding what they see as the role of this committee.

Ideas that were shared:

• Identify methods of shared governance
• Do we have adequate mechanism for shared governance or do we need to change?
• We have a system of shared governance on campus but all players don’t know how to use it correctly
• The committees’ job is to make it clear how all bodies interact
• We need to clarify what already exists

How are members chosen to sit on Campus Council?

A brief discussion regarding how Campus Council members were chosen from their respective groups was initiated and it was learned that:

• Clerical Staff Council doesn’t have any specific guidelines stating who serves (usually the vice president of CSC). However, not all clerical employees belong to the Clerical Staff Council
• O and M operates more in a hierarchical fashion. Top person serves
• Divisions Chairs serve on Campus Council and they are elected to their position.

FYI BOOK

This document was sent to all committee members prior to this meeting. The section on College Governance was identified and reviewed.

Committee members agreed that this is the document our committee should utilize to clarify the roles of Campus Council, Faculty Senate and amplify the section on Shared Governance.

Suggested changes to this document are as follows

1. We need to integrate Campus Council in this document by:

· Specifying what members do

· Who the members are

· How they are chosen

· What the mission of Campus Council is

2. Invite Cindy Martin, (author of the FYI document) to join the committee
3. Create an organizational chart of the Shared Governance Structure which would identify the bodies/groups on campus and how they have input into the decision making process.
4. Committee members agreed that the formal administrative structure is different from the shared governance structure and every employee has 2-3 mechanisms to have his/her voice heard

Specific actions and committee members assigned

1. Jim Goodman will write the Faculty Senate information pertaining to responsibilities and specific committees
2. Cliff Togo will create the Shared Governance structure chart which should be placed in the FYI document and lead the section
3. Dale Hood will put FYI document on the web
4. Dale will contact Cindy Martin and invite her to join committee
